The paintings from 2016 to 2018 were made in response to journeys made though both the Welsh landscape and my subconscious mind. They are influenced by hard-edged abstraction from the 1950’s. This style is nuanced with subtle elements of expressionism and spontaneous gesture. The use of acrylic paint on a small, regular format has disciplined me to render a sensitive, intensely private focused response to the subject. The paintings’ forms have great significance for me. The circles, for example, derive from my work as a Tai Chi teacher (they are part of me), the sun, roundabouts, winding roads, and rolling mountains. I hope this will give a link and encourage an understanding of the connection between me, my journey as a Tai Chi Teacher, and my abstract art. Earlier works from 2009 were more linked to Abstract Expressionism.
